The vibrant city of Chester is completely buzzing with a wide range of culturally exciting venues, exhibitions and festivals for you to enjoy. Chester itself is one of the best displays of history in the country but if you want to learn about the city's past then there are number of museums you could visit. Other historic sites where you can uncover much of Chester's past traditions and culture include the Roman Amphitheatre, which 2,000 years ago was used to entertain 7,000 spectators. Part of the arena has been excavated in 2005 and you can view the latest finds at the Chester Visitor Centre across the road. Alternatively you may take a walk into the amphitheatre from just outside the city walls, and kiss the altar of Nemesis, as gladiators once did when preparing for battle. Chester Cathedral [map], which has been a place of worship for more than 1,000 years is also worth a look, as are the 13th century half-timber Rows on Eastgate Street, Bridge Street, Northgate Street and Foregate Street, and the enchanting Eastgate Clock, which was erected to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

At certain times of the year Chester celebrates its heritage and culture through a number of festivals and events, such as the Chester Lantern Festival in November when the streets come alive with dancers and music, and the Chester Fringe Festival in July, which brings together an entertaining mix of drama, dance and music at various venues across the city.

However, if it's a great Chester tradition you're after head to the city between May and August when you get the chance to see the Chester Town Crier make a proclamation at midday at The Cross, Tuesday to Saturday. Between May and October you may also get a chance to watch the Changing of the Roman Guard at the Deva Fortress, where you'll find legionaries in full battle gear. This event will take place on Sundays and the parade starts at Chester Visitor Centre at midday.

Famous for:

Chester may arguably be the richest city in Britain for archaeological and architectural treasures preserved to this day from the time of the Roman occupation. Originally the fortress site of the 20th legion (Valeria Victrix) it was charged with suppressed the uprising of the army led by the warrior queen known as Boadicea the town being known then (c. AD70) as Deva and soon became the major trading port. Its huge harbour and border position made it one of the finest strategic outposts of the Roman Empire. After the Romans had gone, midst the Dark Ages, Viking raiders arrived in their long boats along the same route. By the time of the 1700s the River Dee had changed course and the port had silted up. The walls were not needed for defence any longer and were restyled into the pleasant walkways that we enjoy today. The Industrial Revolution brought railways canals, and roads and it was during this time that many important buildings were restored. One of the most distinctive medieval feature of the city is The Rows. These are double-level walkways which have a continuous line of balconies and with shops at street and first-floor levels.

Travel info:

From London a hourly service to and from London; otherwise a single change of trains at Crewe connects with many other London trains. Chester is on the North Wales Coast line, over which trains starting at Crewe and Manchester run to Llandudno and Holy head; direct trains will also run from and via Chester to Birmingham, Cardiff and Shrewsbury.

From Liverpool (40min) and Birkenhead - Chester is a southern terminus on Merseyrail’s Wirral Line which provides direct trains.

From Manchester a second line runs between Chester and Manchester - the journey is the scenic route in all senses of the word. The trip takes substantially longer but travels through rural Cheshire before reaching Manchester's outer suburbs. So, if time is of the essence, you would be advised to take the more regular rail journey and save around half an hour in traveling time, most national coaches stop in Chester. Chester coach station in the city centre is now closed. The coaches will stop at a bus stop on Vicars Lane, opposite the Visitor Centre near the Roman Amphitheatre.

Chester is situated towards the eastern end of the A55, which becomes the M53, which crosses the M56. London is approximately 274 Km by road, Birmingham approximately 90 miles, Manchester approximately 64 Km, Liverpool approximately 24 Km.

Overview:

Chester is a picturesque town on the side of the river Dee in Cheshire, in the North West of England, not too far from Liverpool. Chester has a wide range of activities available to visitors, from simply walking round the small city centre and shopping to visiting the very visible Roman ruins which are dotted through the town. Particularly impressive is the Roman amphitheatre next to Grosvenor Park, and you can also view a reconstructed holocaust (Roman underfloor heating, more interesting than it sounds) in the Roman Gardens - and another one in the basement of a Spud U Like restaurant! Chester Racecourse is nearby for the family's gamblers and horse fans, and the more active-minded can try their hand at boating on the River Dee. Chester Cathedral is well worth a visit, along with Chester Zoo (which might be more to the tastes of the younger members of the family).
