Cathair na Mart was located somewhere close to the front lawn of the now Westport House. The town centre was originally designed by a man named James Wyatt in 1780. The layout of the town follows the medieval principles of urban design introduced by the Normans in the 13th century.


Culture:


Westport is a unique and charming, heritage town; Westport is a captivating blend of traditional and modern. There are many different things on offer for you to see and do! Including many wonderful riverside walks, walk down the elegant tree-lined Mall with its stately Georgian buildings, alongside the Carrowbeg River. There are a variety of wonderful restaurants & bars, historical sites, fishing, golf and the famous pilgrimage mountain Croagh Patrick offers a striking backdrop to the town. Clew Bay Heritage Centre traces the history of Westport town and the Clew Bay There are many different artefacts on display from pre-Christian times to the present. The Clew Bay Heritage Centre is situated in a 19th century building, just 2 kilometres from the centre of Westport.


Famous for:


Wesport is probably most famous for Croagh Patrick, which is one of Europe's best known places of Pilgrimage. The mountain overlooks the town and the church that is located on top of Croagh Patrick can be seen from Westport. The stately home to the Marquess of Sligo known as Westport House is located in the town. Westport House is considered one of Ireland's most beautiful historic homes open to the public. Westport House is situated in hugely amazing parkland surrounding with a lake, terraces, gardens and views overlooking Clew Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, Achill, Clare Island and Croagh Patrick.


The dungeons can be still seen to this day. The Westport Festival of Music and Food is a 2-day family friendly event held every year and set in the grounds of Westport House. It features incredible international musical acts, quality on-site camping, amazing food, comedy, beer tents and wine bars, the organisers create a truly relaxed and friendly atmosphere.


Travel:


Wesport is on the N5 from Dublin to Mayo. The Westport railway station is located just 7 minutes' walk from town. Westport railway station first opened on 28th January 1866. Stag Idea's: Westport has many different activities to offer for stag parties to enjoy, from a nice relaxing chill day or enjoying an adrenaline filled day. The following are a list of some of these activities: The Adventure Islands ' there are a lot of adventure activities to be enjoyed here at Westport & Clew Bay.


Some activities include Surfing, Kayaking, Sailing, Archery, boat tour, Zip Line and many more other activities to be enjoyed here. Carrowholly Stables ' take in the beautiful scenery by enjoying a horse ride along a beach or trail rides If you have a feeling you may need a spiritual lift why not tackle the stunning Croagh Patrick and take it the lovely scenery of Westport as you reach the top of the mountain. Why not take a stroll on The Great Western Greenway. The Greenway is a 42km long track for cyclists, walkers and runners which follows the route of the former Achill to Westport railway line.


Night Life:


Few towns can offer more choice than Westport. Westport offers an array of pubs, restaurants, live music venues, traditional Irish music sessions, clubs and late night bars. Here are only a few examples of places to go: C2 Night Club ' Over 18's only. C2 Nightclub is 1 of the more popular Nightclubs in the West of Ireland. T. Bourkes: A friendly local bar located on Castlebar Street. There is music sessions 7 nights a week. Cosy Joe's is a modern day lively bar situated right in the heart of Westport town.


Matt Molloy's is a very popular tourist spot in the town, with live music sessions. Matt Molloy is an Irish musician who joined The Chieftains in 1979. Cronin's Sheebeen is an upmarket bar and restaurant serving the finest in food and drink and specialising in seafood.


Food:


The town boasts many fine restaurants, specializing particularly in seafood and many fine traditional pubs, all providing a friendly ambience and warm Irish hospitality. The following are a few examples of pubs and restaurants: Madden's Bistro is located in the heart of Westport town. Their dishes include British, French, Greek and Mediterranean, Indian/Pakistani, Irish, Italian, Latin American, Thai and vegetarian dishes. JJ O' Malleys bar & restaurant is located at the top of Bridge Street in the heart of Westport town.


At JJ O' Malleys bar local musicians play the best in Traditional ballads weeknights. The Quay Cottage ' located on the seafront and it is beside the entrance gates to Westport House. It combines the very best of Irish food and a French flair. Torrinos Restaurant is located in the heart of Westport town on Market Lane just off the main street. Torrinos opened in 1996 and so has many years' experience in producing authentic Italian food from pasta, pizza, steak, and seafood.
