Boyana Church, a UNESCO heritage site, is considered one of the only complete and perfectly preserved monuments of East European medieval art. Saint George Church (the Rotunda) is one of the oldest most historicly preserved building in Sofia. Built as a pagan monastery in the 3rd century A.D. You can visit a National Museum of History located in Boyana Quarter, at the skirts of Mount Vitosha, and in the Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences on Alexander I Square.

History:


Originally a Thracian settlement, Sofia came under the dominion of Alexander the Great and the Macedonians in the 4th-century BCE before being taking over by the Romans in the early 1st-century CE, who called the city Serdica. When the Third Bulgarian Empire came into existence, Bulgaria was ,again made capital in 1879. Bulgaria became independent roughly around 1908, thanks to its liberation by Russian Forces. During WWII the country was taking over by the Soviet Union, and remained communist until the dissolution of the USSR in 1989. Today, Sofia is a modern, European capital has well over one million residents, renowned for its springs and mineral water.
