Whether you fancy some fast paced action in your days like paintballing, wakeboarding or rally driving or some slower paced activities like boating or bicycling Riga has it all. When it's evening time and time to let the hair down, the choices abound. Culture:
Riga has a vibrant cultural identity and it's fitting that it will be the European Capital of Culture in 2014. There are a wide range of places to visit to get a glimpse of Latvian culture. The Latvian National Opera has regular operatic and ballet events featuring local and international world class stars. Latvian theatres are also to be found in the city where if you're lucky you'll learn some things about what shaped the Riga and Latvia of today. There are many museums and galleries around the city in places like the old town where exhibits can be viewed and souvenirs or works of art can be purchased. In both the museums and the theatres/opera houses one can witness the folk songs and the artwork like landscape paintings that helped Latvians mould their own uniqueness.
Famous for:
Besides from its beautiful girls, Riga is also famous for its dense gatherings of Art Nouveau architecture which can be viewed all over the city and there are also many prominent buildings made of wood. The Dome Cathedral is Lutheran and is the largest in the Baltic States and it dates from the 13th century and it contains a magnificent organ dating from 1844. St Peters Church is another grand Lutheran church dating from the 13th century. The city is also famous for its strategic location on the Baltic Sea as a hub between North, East and West.

Air- Ryanair service Riga international airport and a return ticket from the British Isles can be got for as low as 80 euros. Flights are about 2 and a half hours. Number 22 bus takes you into the city centre (6miles) for 1 euro. Or a taxi will cost you 14.

For the adventure hungry in your stag party members there are a wealth of things to occupy you in this lively city. You can rent quad bikes and go for a quad bike safari. For the adrenaline junkies in your party the ideal outlet will be the bobsleigh track, there's a summer and a winter bob to be had here depending on the time of year. There's indoor and outdoor go karting available in this action city too so the weather has no effect. If you are here in the depths of winter however a jaunt on the snowmobiles is guaranteed to create lots of fun filled antics. In summer, a spin on the jet skis is equally as uproarious. Some of you might vote to take a ride up into the skies in a hot air balloon and some of you may just want to jump down from the skies in a parachute jump. Yes Riga is the entertainment capital of this part of the world and it is the place wealthy Russians come to let their hair down and to party. The bars and the clubs are packed with beautiful Russian and Latvian girls all getting their kicks. The local beers are well reputed and of course top quality Russian vodkas are perennially available. There is a concentration of bars, cafes and pubs in the Old Town which are nearly always crowded and bubbling with atmosphere. The city's famous clubbing scene must be sampled on a visit to Riga and Nautilus offers a fabulous clubbing experience with stylish patrons who know their techno, or you could pop to Club Essential for a bigger and slightly cheesier club feel.

Latvian food is very much a melting pot full of tasty ingredients gathered from all the regions and cultures in the vicinity. Between Polish, Russian and German traditional foods the eateries are guaranteed to provide you with a great assortment of dishes made from staples like pork, potatoes and cabbage with sumptuous dumplings as the Latvian signature. Just like any big city there are also plenty of international options available.
History:
Riga was founded in 1201 by Albert of Bremen as a base for the Northern Crusades from where to launch attacks on the rest of Latvia. It was part of the German/Roman Empire until after the reformation in the 16th century when it became protestant. Its prosperity in later centuries and its geographical importance led to it being a frequent point of conflict between the powers of the Germans, Poles, Lithuanians, Swedes and Russians.
