History:

The Hamburg we know today was founded as far back as the 9th century by missionaries intent on converting the Saxons. The city was an important port and trading centre throughout the middle ages. In the 12th century Hamburg became a state and despite one or two brief Danish occupations remained as so for several centuries. The city joined the Hanseatic League in the 14th century which brought a great period of prosperity to the city. The city survived through some of the worst devastations known to man, the 14th century Black Death and the great fire of 1842. These both decimated the town but either time it got back on its feet and prior to WWI it was a booming port, one of the largest in the world. The city state joined West Germany post WWII and it has been thriving ever since.
