Overview:

Newcastle played a huge role during the 19th-century Industrial Revolution, and was a dominant centre for coal mining and manufacturing. Heavy industries in Newcastle decreased in the second half of the 20th century; office, service and retail employment are now the city's staples. The city is also recognised today for its dedication to environmental issues, with a programme planned for Newcastle to become "the first Carbon Neutral town". In 2010, Newcastle was placed ninth in the retail centre expenditure division of the UK. There are numerous major shopping areas in Newcastle City Centre. The largest one of these has to be the Eldon Square Shopping Centre, one of the largest city centre shopping complexes in the UK.

History:

The city of Newcastle upon Tyne was established at the lowest place the Tyne could be easily crossed. In 1080 the Normans crafted a wooden fort to safeguard the crossing. They also designed and built a wooden bridge. (The 'new castle' was rebuilt in stone in the 12th century). Soon a little town began to grow in the shadow of the new castle and was named after it. In the Middle Ages towns often developed by castles because the garrisons provided a market for the townspeople's goods. Newcastle Upon Tyne became successful partly because of the wars between the English and the Scots. There was lots of traffic through Newcastle and travellers would have spent money there. Newcastle upon Tyne then became a busy port. Back in the Middle Ages the main export was wool. (Wool was definitely Englands most important export). Hides, grindstones and lead would also of been exported. Newcastle also powerfully exported coal, from the 13th century. Much of it was exported to London where many industries would have used it. Imports would have included alum and luxuries such as spices and wine. Guide for Eating out in Newcastle.
