By car - Newcastle upon Tyne will be well signposted from both the north, south and west. The city lies at the joining of the A1 (the main East Coast route from London to Edinburgh) and the A69 which is a major east-west route to Carlisle and the M6. The A1 goes around the city to the west.

By bus - Newcastle Coach Station is located at the southern end of St James' Boulevard, near the Centre for Life and is just a short walk from the centre of town. Overview:

Newcastle played a huge role during the 19th-century Industrial Revolution, and was a dominant centre for coal mining and manufacturing. History:

The city of Newcastle upon Tyne was established at the lowest place the Tyne could be easily crossed. In 1080 the Normans crafted a wooden fort to safeguard the crossing. They also designed and built a wooden bridge. (The 'new castle' was rebuilt in stone in the 12th century). Soon a little town began to grow in the shadow of the new castle and was named after it. In the Middle Ages towns often developed by castles because the garrisons provided a market for the townspeople's goods. Newcastle Upon Tyne became successful partly because of the wars between the English and the Scots. There was lots of traffic through Newcastle and travellers would have spent money there. Newcastle upon Tyne then became a busy port. Back in the Middle Ages the main export was wool. (Wool was definitely Englands most important export). Hides, grindstones and lead would also of been exported. Newcastle also powerfully exported coal, from the 13th century. Much of it was exported to London where many industries would have used it.
