History:
The strength of Bournemouth as a resort has always been the beauty of its sea-front and gardens. The gardens date back to at least the eighteenth century, when the Lord of the Manor enclosed a some acres of land as a hunting ground and built a lodge - Decoy House ' near where Debenhams now stands in the Square. Many famous authors have written about Bournemouth over the years. Thomas Hardy described Bournemouth as a 'Mediterranean lounging place on the English Channel' and Betjeman said 'Bournemouth is a stately Victorian duchess with her head touching Christchurch and her feet turned towards Poole.'
